Overview

Mount Meru, a dormant stratovolcano situated in Arusha National Park, stands at an elevation of 4,566 meters (14,980 ft) and is located 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The typical duration for a Mount Meru Climb is four days, although it is possible to complete the trek to the Summit in just 3 days.

The mountain is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day and ranks as the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, depending on the definition used. Climbing Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, offers a fantastic experience with minimal crowds and the opportunity to witness incredible wildlife as you hike past wild animals.

At 8:00, you will be collected from your lodging and transported to Momella gate to complete the necessary registration procedures. Embark on your ascent through the enchanting, verdant forest, taking in the breathtaking natural scenery. Along the journey, you may encounter various wildlife species such as zebras, giraffes, and antelopes. The trail will guide you to Miriakamba hut, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner and rest for the night.

After the hot breakfast, trek out from the Montana forest to the saddle below Little Meru. Have some lunch at Saddle Hut and a long rest. Get prepared for the summit and drink enough water.

Awake at 23:00 to prepare and put on your climbing equipment. Begin your ascent at 00:00, taking it slow and steady (“pole pole”) towards Rhino Point, and then continue onwards to Cobra Point. Eventually, you will reach Socialist Peak just as the sun rises, where you can take some time to rest and capture breathtaking photos. Afterward, start your descent towards Saddle Hut, where you can enjoy a well-deserved brunch and take a short break. The trail will then lead you to Miriakamba Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night. The next morning, have an early breakfast and continue your descent until you finally reach Momella Gate in the late morning. From there, you can return to your previous accommodations in Arusha/Moshi town. It is customary to give tips either at the last campsite or at a specific gate.
